The US Navy is moving ahead with a major modernization initiative for its MH-60 Seahawk helicopter fleet, with several companies selected to support an initial prototype effort designed to keep the aircraft relevant through 2050.Sierra Nevada Corporation, Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, Rockwell Collins, and Technology Security Associates will contribute to different areas of the project. Their responsibilities include structural integration, flight-critical avionics, digital architecture, and verification of open-system technologies.The H-60 Multi-Mission Helicopter Program Office is leading the initiative in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy. During the first phase, participating companies will develop preliminary designs for critical avionics and the aircraft’s digital backbone while preparing the helicopter for subsequent testing.A second phase is expected to move the program toward prototype construction and verification. Digital engineering and modeling tools will be used to shorten development cycles and improve the efficiency of testing.The program will also apply Modular Open Systems Approach principles. This architecture is intended to make it easier to introduce new equipment and software without requiring extensive modifications to the existing aircraft.The same approach could eventually influence future vertical-lift programs by establishing a flexible digital architecture that can accommodate evolving technologies.The Seahawk family originated from a US Navy requirement in the 1970s for a replacement for the SH-2 Seasprite. The Navy adapted the Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk design, resulting in the SH-60B, which entered service in 1984.The platform subsequently developed into the MH-60R and MH-60S. The MH-60R specializes in anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, electronic warfare, and command-and-control missions, while the MH-60S supports combat search and rescue, special operations, mine countermeasures, and surface warfare.The Navy is using an Other Transaction Authority arrangement through the Naval Aviation Systems Consortium to work with industry. Final agreements will depend on negotiations and completion of Phase 1 work statements.
