L3Harris Technologies has completed the first two-aircraft flight test of its Viper Shield electronic warfare system aboard F-16 fighter jets. The milestone represents another step toward full-rate production of the system for eight customer nations.
The test was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California. For the first time, an F-16C and an F-16D operated together while carrying Viper Shield equipment. L3Harris said the event demonstrated the system’s ability to function during realistic multi-aircraft missions while detecting, identifying, and countering modern electromagnetic threats.
Engineers also assessed the interaction between Viper Shield and the F-16’s existing avionics across several mission profiles. The testing examined the system’s digital architecture and its ability to respond in real time during electronic warfare scenarios.
Production is now being expanded to meet planned demand. L3Harris said 233 Viper Shield systems are currently planned, while eight countries have selected the system. The company is increasing production capacity to support those international requirements.
