In response to declining radar performance in its MiG-29K fleet, the Indian Navy has launched an upgrade initiative centered on the indigenous Uttam Mk2 AESA radar. The existing Zhuk-ME system has suffered reliability issues due to prolonged exposure to maritime conditions. The new radar introduces advanced capabilities such as simultaneous tracking of multiple targets and improved resilience against jamming. This transition aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in defense technology. The upgrade will also facilitate the integration of locally developed Astra missiles, enhancing operational flexibility. Efforts are underway to ensure the radar can withstand corrosive sea environments through improved protection measures. Given delays in future naval fighter programs, this modernization ensures the MiG-29K fleet remains operationally relevant and capable in the long term.
