Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has announced that the supply situation for GE F404-IN20 engines used in the Tejas Mk1A fighter jet program is expected to improve considerably over the coming months. During the company’s Q4 FY26 conference call, HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kota confirmed that six engines have already been delivered by GE Aerospace, while an additional 15 to 20 engines are expected before the end of the year. The update is considered a major boost for the Tejas Mk1A program, which has faced repeated delays due to disruptions in engine deliveries from the United States. The Indian Air Force’s ₹46,898 crore contract for 83 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets had experienced schedule pressure after global supply chain problems affected GE Aerospace’s production timelines. HAL stated that the arrival of additional engines will help stabilize manufacturing operations and support a gradual increase in aircraft assembly. Some of the delivered engines are currently undergoing testing and integration, while others remain in the validation phase as refinement work on the Tejas Mk1A platform continues. Industry analysts believe that the improved engine supply pipeline could allow HAL to significantly increase production rates during FY27 and FY28. The Indian Air Force is closely monitoring the program because of the urgent need to replace retiring MiG-series aircraft and restore squadron strength levels. The Tejas Mk1A is expected to become one of the most important components of the IAF’s future fighter fleet and a key symbol of India’s indigenous aerospace capability.
