India has begun formal efforts to participate in the French-led Future Combat Air System, a multinational sixth-generation fighter programme. New Delhi has selected FCAS over the Global Combat Air Program involving Italy, Japan and the UK. India’s defence ministry confirmed that it had initiated coordinated efforts to join the initiative. If approved, participation could give Indian industry access to selected technologies involving manned-unmanned teaming, artificial intelligence and cloud networking. The Parliament Standing Committee on Defence has requested a detailed report on the programme’s status, roadmap and timeline. India’s move follows disagreements between France and Germany over FCAS workshare, intellectual property and fighter requirements, creating an opportunity for additional partners. The proposal also fits India’s growing defence relationship with France, including discussions over 114 additional Rafale fighters and joint engine development for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. India and France share interests in carrier aviation and airborne nuclear deterrence. New Delhi is also seeking next-generation combat aviation capabilities as China develops advanced stealth and sixth-generation aircraft.
