Lockheed Martin Completes First Live-Fire Test of Kodiak Containerized GMLRS LauncherLockheed Martin has completed the first live-fire demonstration of its new Kodiak containerized launcher, marking an important step in the development of a flexible precision-fire system capable of launching Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) munitions from land, air, and maritime platforms.During the test, the company successfully loaded and launched a Reduced-Range Practice Rocket, a training munition used by crews operating the HIMARS and M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System. The exercise demonstrated the basic firing capability of the containerized system while using a training round designed to replicate GMLRS and other MLRS Family of Munitions firing procedures.The Kodiak system is intended to provide military users with another option for deploying precision fires. Its containerized design could allow platforms that cannot accommodate traditional rocket launchers to gain access to long-range precision-fire capabilities. This approach could potentially expand the number of platforms capable of supporting missile and rocket operations.According to Lockheed Martin, the system also offers cost advantages compared with conventional launcher configurations. Its compact design provides another potential benefit by creating a lower-observable profile than larger mobile launchers such as the HIMARS and M270A2 MLRS.The company said each Kodiak container can accommodate up to 12 GMLRS rockets. This allows users to configure significant firepower within a relatively compact footprint. The containerized architecture could therefore provide scalable options for forces seeking additional precision-fire capacity without relying exclusively on traditional self-propelled launch vehicles.The demonstration is part of Lockheed Martin’s wider effort to develop containerized weapon systems. The company previously tested the Grizzly containerized launcher, which is designed to fire Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles against attack drones.By developing both Kodiak and Grizzly, Lockheed Martin is demonstrating an approach that applies containerization to different categories of military capability. Kodiak is focused on offensive precision fires using GMLRS munitions, while Grizzly is intended to provide a defensive capability against aerial threats.The successful live-fire test represents an important milestone because it moves Kodiak beyond development and into a demonstrated firing capability. Further testing and integration work will determine how the system can be incorporated into different land, air, and sea-based platforms.
