Romania is significantly enhancing its integrated air-defense network through the acquisition of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 35 and Skynex systems. The modernization program introduces a combination of highly mobile short-range protection and networked air-defense capabilities designed to counter drones, loitering munitions, cruise missiles, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. By integrating Skyranger turrets onto Lynx KF41 combat vehicles while deploying Skynex for fixed-site protection, Romania is creating a flexible, layered defense architecture capable of protecting maneuver forces as well as critical national infrastructure. This investment represents a major milestone in strengthening military readiness along NATO’s eastern frontier and the strategically important Black Sea region.
