Diehl Defence has completed the delivery of the first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system to Estonia, providing the country with a significantly expanded air defense capability.

Stationed at Ämari Air Base, the system enables the Estonian Air Defence Wing to engage a variety of airborne threats, including combat aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles, at distances reaching 40 kilometers and heights of up to 20 kilometers.

A typical IRIS-T SLM battery comprises launch vehicles, radar sensors, and a command-and-control hub, supplemented by support vehicles for maintenance, reloading, and spare-parts management. Its mobile architecture allows forces to rapidly reposition the system to address shifting tactical situations.

Estonia ordered three systems in 2023 under what was described as the country’s largest defense acquisition program, with the remaining deliveries expected during the next year.

Brigadier General Riivo Valge noted that the system’s ability to engage targets at higher altitudes closes a critical vulnerability and enhances the overall effectiveness of Estonia’s air defense network.

The IRIS-T SLM combines high tactical mobility with full 360-degree engagement coverage and can handle multiple simultaneous threats while maintaining a lean operational footprint. According to Diehl Defence, the system has recorded an interception success rate exceeding 95 percent during combat operations in Ukraine.

The acquisition forms part of the broader European Sky Shield Initiative, launched by Germany in 2022 to strengthen air and missile defense cooperation among European nations. Through the program, eight member states have selected the IRIS-T SLM, leveraging shared procurement processes and coordinated support structures for training, maintenance, and logistics.
