Norway is set to strengthen its artillery capabilities through a potential $270 million US arms package covering M795 155mm high-explosive projectiles. Approved by the US State Department, the proposed Foreign Military Sale also includes technical services, documentation, logistics and other support required to operate the ammunition. The United States said the acquisition would improve Norway’s artillery and mid-range strike capabilities while helping the NATO ally respond to current and future security threats. The M795 was developed for a broad range of 155mm howitzer platforms, including both self-propelled and towed systems. The high-fragmentation projectile is designed to engage a variety of battlefield targets, including personnel, armored vehicles, communications infrastructure, surveillance assets, supply areas and installations. The latest version uses a high-explosive filling based on TNT or IMX-101. Measuring around 34 inches long, the projectile can reach beyond 20 kilometers under stated conditions. The agreement would strengthen NATO interoperability and expand Norway’s ability to sustain artillery operations alongside allied forces.
