Northrop Grumman Introduces 50mm Raid Hunter Gun-Based Air Defense SystemAs airborne threats become more diverse and place increasing pressure on short-range air-defense systems, Northrop Grumman has introduced a new gun-based capability designed to provide an additional layer of protection.Known as Raid Hunter Gun-Based Air Defense, the system combines networked controllers, advanced battle-management capabilities, Chain Gun technology, and 50mm ammunition to engage airborne threats.The system is designed around guided projectiles and a high rate of fire. Its deep ammunition magazines and rapid reload capability are intended to support sustained engagements rather than relying on a limited number of interceptors.Gun-based air defense can provide an important complementary capability within a layered defense architecture. While missiles remain important against many airborne threats, guns can provide another method of engagement and may be particularly useful when forces require sustained defensive fire.Raid Hunter combines the weapon, ammunition, sensors, and control elements into a networked architecture. This allows the system to be integrated into broader air-defense networks and receive information needed to identify and engage threats.The use of guided 50mm projectiles is a major component of the concept. Guidance can improve the ability of projectiles to reach airborne targets compared with conventional unguided ammunition, while the system’s high rate of fire provides additional engagement capacity.Northrop Grumman’s development reflects the changing air-defense environment, where military forces must increasingly contend with drones and other airborne threats. The Raid Hunter concept is intended to add another defensive option to existing short-range air-defense capabilities.
