Lockheed Martin has committed a multimillion-dollar investment toward the development of a Modular Payload Delivery System (MPDS) intended to accommodate multiple offensive and defensive hypersonic payloads using a shared missile-body design.The program is aimed at expanding hypersonic weapon production as security demands increase. Recent conflicts, including the war involving Iran, have highlighted pressure on US missile stocks and the capacity of the defense-industrial base.The effort builds on Lockheed Martin’s collaboration with Albany Engineered Composites, which focuses on using advanced composite manufacturing methods to increase hypersonic production efficiency.According to the company, the MPDS is designed so that different payload configurations can be incorporated without significantly changing the broader weapon system. A standardized hypersonic airframe could therefore be adapted for missions such as extended-range strikes, shorter-range missions carrying heavier payloads, and missile-defense roles.The system draws on technologies that have already undergone flight testing. Lockheed Martin also plans to use simplified integration processes and automated manufacturing techniques to lower labor demands and accelerate production and delivery schedules.
