Lockheed Martin has successfully completed a critical structural burst test for the second-stage motor case of the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI), marking another milestone toward the program’s critical design review. Engineers tested the carbon-fiber motor case by inserting a reinforced water-filled vessel and applying pressures exceeding expected launch conditions. The structure withstood the required stress levels before controlled failure, validating its ability to survive launch forces while delivering sufficient propulsion for the interceptor. The successful demonstration keeps the program on schedule for a critical design review later this year and supports the objective of deploying the NGI by 2030. Developed for the Missile Defense Agency, the interceptor is intended to replace aging Ground-Based Interceptors protecting the United States against long-range ballistic missile threats. Featuring modular architecture, multiple kill vehicles, advanced target discrimination, and digital engineering techniques, the NGI aims to improve reliability while reducing development timelines. Production will be supported by Lockheed Martin’s recently opened Missile Assembly Building 5 in Courtland, Alabama.
