Thailand is exploring the possible purchase of India’s BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missile to enhance the Royal Thai Navy’s ability to deter maritime threats and protect critical sea lanes. The proposal forms part of Bangkok’s broader effort to strengthen independent defense capabilities and reduce reliance on larger military partners. The discussions follow a bilateral defense meeting held in Bangkok in June, during which India and Thailand agreed to deepen cooperation in defense manufacturing. Thailand’s consideration of BrahMos is reportedly linked primarily to its operational requirements and its traditional strategy of maintaining balanced relationships with major powers. While Bangkok has close economic and defense links with China, it also maintains security partnerships with the United States and other international suppliers. The potential agreement would represent another important step in India’s growing defense export campaign. BrahMos, jointly developed by India and Russia, has already been exported to the Philippines, while India is pursuing additional opportunities with Indonesia, Vietnam, and the UAE.
