Boeing and Northrop Grumman have demonstrated a new level of automated cooperation between the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. The technology demonstration allowed the two platforms to exchange information using an open, standardized machine-to-machine interface supported by AI-enabled functions. During the test, Triton used AI algorithms to respond to a request from the crewed Poseidon, showing how autonomous systems can contribute to maritime surveillance and targeting missions without requiring continuous manual control. The demonstration relied on the Universal Command and Control Interface, developed around the Open Mission Systems and Autonomy Government Reference Architecture. This framework is intended to simplify integration between different military platforms and allow mission information to move quickly between compatible systems. The technology could improve coordinated operations involving surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting and anti-surface warfare assets. By combining the endurance of the Triton with the human decision-making capabilities of the P-8A, the approach points toward more effective crewed-uncrewed teaming. The demonstration also supports broader efforts to create interoperable and adaptable maritime networks.
