Canada has officially joined the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as the first observer nation, marking a significant milestone in the multinational effort to develop a sixth-generation stealth fighter aircraft. Launched in 2022 by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, the program is focused on delivering a supersonic next-generation combat aircraft by 2035 to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon currently operated by several European air forces. Under the observer arrangement, Canada will not have voting rights or direct decision-making authority, but it will gain valuable access to the program’s technical discussions, industrial cooperation initiatives, and long-term capability development plans. The agreement also creates opportunities for Canadian defense industries to better understand future aerospace technologies while laying the foundation for potential participation in later stages of the program. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Canada’s inclusion strengthens the multinational partnership, while Defense Minister Wes Streeting emphasized that the agreement reinforces long-term defense cooperation between the United Kingdom and Canada. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi described Canada’s participation as a major step that enhances collaboration among the four countries. Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty stated that observer status will deepen Canada’s understanding of next-generation combat air capabilities and emerging military aviation technologies. The project has recently gained momentum after Britain, Italy, and Japan jointly committed 4.6 billion pounds ($6.2 billion) to continue aircraft development. The future fighter is being designed by a joint venture involving BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd., while Britain has separately pledged 8.6 billion pounds ($11.5 billion) over the next four years under its Defence Investment Plan to accelerate the program.
