The long-running Sino-Russian Advanced Heavy Lift helicopter initiative is progressing toward production as both nations seek to strengthen strategic airlift capabilities. AVIC is overseeing development of the helicopter specifically for Chinese operational requirements, while Russian firms contribute expertise in advanced transmission systems and specialized aerospace components. Designed for operations in mountainous and high-altitude environments where conventional helicopters face performance limitations, the AHL will significantly improve troop mobility, logistics support, and infrastructure development across remote regions. With an anticipated payload capacity of up to 16 tons and a projected fleet of 200 aircraft, the program is expected to become a cornerstone of China’s future heavy-lift aviation capabilities.
