Australia plans to retire its fleet of Leonardo C-27J Spartan military transport aircraft as part of a broader defense strategy emphasizing long-range strike and surveillance capabilities. The Royal Australian Air Force is expected to replace the Spartans with commercial airframes for regional humanitarian and Pacific support missions, while incoming C-130J Hercules aircraft will assume more demanding operational roles. Officials reportedly cited maintenance challenges, spare parts shortages, and integration difficulties related to Australia’s customized configuration as contributing factors behind the decision. Despite these issues, the Spartan fleet has played an important role in disaster relief, remote airstrip access, and humanitarian operations across the Pacific region.
