Britain has narrowed its search for an autonomous drone companion to the Apache attack helicopter by awarding concept development contracts to four defense firms under the Project NYX program. Anduril UK, BAE Systems, Tekever, and Thales will now advance designs for vertical take-off and landing drones capable of operating alongside AH-64E Apaches in reconnaissance, strike, and suppression missions. The envisioned platform will use AI-driven autonomy under a “command rather than control” approach, enabling rapid battlefield responses with limited human intervention. The Ministry of Defence plans to evaluate the competing concepts before selecting two finalists for prototype work ahead of a potential fielding target by the end of the decade.
