Bell Textron has finalized the initial integration of its SPINE upgrade package for the US Marine Corps’ AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters, advancing efforts to modernize legacy H-1 platforms. The SPINE initiative enhances both structural integrity and electrical power systems, enabling the aircraft to better support next-generation mission equipment and increasing overall mission performance. The first upgraded helicopters have been transferred to Naval Air Station Patuxent River for operational assessment, where collected data will support ongoing development. The upgrade process, conducted primarily in Amarillo, Texas, spanned 19 months and included improvements to drivetrain components, fuselage modifications, and electrical system upgrades, alongside maintenance work in Fort Worth. This effort is part of a broader strategy to extend platform service life and improve operational effectiveness, ensuring the Marine Corps maintains a capable and resilient helicopter fleet in increasingly complex threat environments.
