Japan has initiated preparations to deploy its enhanced Type 12 long-range surface-to-ship missile system after launchers for the first batch arrived at Camp Kengun in Kumamoto Prefecture. Located on the southwestern island of Kyushu, the base sits near critical maritime routes and overlooks the East China Sea, making it a strategically important location for Japan’s evolving defense strategy. Government officials confirmed that the upgraded missiles are expected to become operational at the facility by the end of March. Developed domestically by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Type 12 missile has been significantly improved since 2022 as part of Japan’s effort to expand its stand-off strike capabilities. While the earlier version had an operational range of around 200 kilometers, the upgraded variant can reportedly reach distances close to 1,000 kilometers, greatly expanding Japan’s ability to deter threats and strike hostile naval or land targets from afar. Each missile launcher is mounted on a heavy eight-wheeled truck and can carry up to six missiles weighing approximately 680 kilograms each. The deployment has, however, raised concerns among residents and local authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture. Officials claim the prefectural government was not formally notified about the arrival of the launchers and instead learned about the development through press coverage. Some protesters gathered outside the base, warning that the installation of long-range missiles could turn the region into a potential target during a conflict involving China and Taiwan. Tensions have increased after remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting that Japan could intervene militarily in the event of an attack on Taiwan. In addition to the deployment at Camp Kengun, Japan plans to further strengthen its southwestern defenses by placing surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island by 2031 and installing additional Type 12 missile units at Camp Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture in 2026.
