At the Surface Navy Association 2026 symposium, the U.S. Navy presented the SM‑2 Block IIIC/CU, offering insight into the next phase of medium‑range naval air defense. Designated RIM‑66P, the missile integrates a hybrid semi‑active/active RF seeker, updated guidance electronics, and refined control features intended to keep the SM‑2 viable well into the future.

The Block IIIC series was introduced incrementally, beginning with rapid prototyping and progressing to the IIICU acquisition program approved in 2023. The upgraded seeker reduces ship radar workload while supporting networked engagements using off‑board sensor data. Retaining the proven SM‑2 propulsion system and airframe ensures seamless integration with current naval combat systems and sustained effectiveness against aircraft and anti‑ship cruise missiles.
