Germany and Switzerland are considering joint acquisition of the Patriot air defense system as part of broader efforts to bolster European security and military interoperability. Under the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), discussions led by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Swiss counterpart Martin Pfister focus on synchronizing procurement, training, and system maintenance, aiming to maximize cost efficiency and operational effectiveness. Germany is also assessing whether its Air Force can provide training support to Swiss personnel operating the Patriots. Additionally, both countries are exploring cooperation on the procurement of RCH 155 wheeled howitzers and F-35A fighter jets, further deepening defense industrial and operational collaboration. Joint activities in the Western Balkans, including Althea missions, exemplify ongoing regional security cooperation. Looking forward, a planned summit with Austria in January 2026 is expected to define subsequent steps for coordinated European defense development, reflecting an emphasis on cross-border military synergy in response to evolving threats.
