India and Brazil are reportedly working on a groundbreaking defense deal based on a barter system, allowing both sides to exchange high-value platforms rather than conduct cash-based transactions. Sources suggest that India could receive Embraer’s C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, while Brazil would obtain Indian-built systems of similar worth.
This innovative arrangement could enhance bilateral cooperation, promote indigenous defense manufacturing, and align with both countries’ broader push for strategic autonomy. The deal also reflects the growing defense collaboration among BRICS members and a shared desire to diversify suppliers beyond traditional Western partners.
For India, the C-390 Millennium represents a strong contender in its Medium Transport Aircraft program, intended to phase out the Ilyushin IL-76 fleet. Known for its heavy-lift capacity and ability to operate from rough airstrips, the C-390 is ideal for India’s logistics missions in remote and high-altitude terrains. Embraer has additionally proposed local assembly under the “Make in India” initiative.
Meanwhile, Brazil is seeking new fighter and helicopter options as part of its modernization plan. The South American nation is reportedly evaluating India’s Tejas Mk1A fighter jet and the indigenous LCH Prachand, both offering cost-effective, versatile solutions suited for diverse operational needs.
