Elbit Systems Ltd. has secured a roughly $260 million, six-year contract from Airbus Defence and Space to equip the German Air Force’s A400M transport fleet with its J-MUSIC™ Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM) self-protection system. Awarded by Germany’s Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), this deal calls for the delivery and installation of the compact, modular DIRCM units on 23 A400Ms during scheduled maintenance windows. The J-MUSIC™ DIRCM—part of Elbit’s broader MUSIC™ family—uses advanced infrared imaging and laser counter-measure technology to autonomously detect, track, and neutralize incoming heat-seeking missile threats, especially those from MANPADS. Its scalable design allows seamless integration with diverse aircraft platforms and missile-warning sensors, all while imposing minimal weight and performance penalties. Certification is slated for summer 2025, with full fleet outfitting completed by 2032.
