Ministry of Defence is preparing a major financial commitment of nearly $7 billion to co-develop a next-generation jet engine for the AMCA Mk-2 program. The project, led by Defence Research and Development Organisation through its Gas Turbine Research Establishment, aims to secure advanced propulsion autonomy. Global firms like Rolls-Royce, Safran, and General Electric are competing, offering varying degrees of technology transfer and intellectual property sharing. While the core funding targets design and prototyping, the absence of budget allocation for testing infrastructure, production ecosystems, and workforce training could elevate the total program cost to nearly $10 billion. This initiative reflects India’s ambition to overcome past limitations such as the Kaveri engine program and establish a sustainable aero-engine ecosystem.
