The US Department of Defense has expanded its investment in next-generation airpower by awarding Pratt & Whitney a $3.8 billion contract for the production of F135 engines powering the F-35 Lightning II. This contract, covering Lot 18 and supporting Lot 19 production, brings the total value of recent propulsion efforts to $6.6 billion. The F135 engine is a high-performance afterburning turbofan derived from the F119 engine used in the F-22 Raptor, delivering the power required for advanced stealth and combat operations. In addition to engine manufacturing, the contract includes comprehensive support services such as spare parts, maintenance, and engineering assistance, ensuring long-term operational readiness for the global F-35 fleet. The engine enables the aircraft to reach speeds of Mach 1.6 and operate at high altitudes with extended range. With over 1,400 engines already deployed across allied forces, the program is a cornerstone of multinational defense cooperation. The initiative also has significant economic impact, supporting jobs and industrial activity across the United States. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the contract highlights the ongoing importance of advanced propulsion systems in maintaining technological superiority in modern air combat.
