The US Army plans to continue its partnership with Raytheon to provide long-term logistics and sustainment support for the TOW Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) through 2030. According to a presolicitation notice, the agreement will also cover the vehicle-mounted Modified ITAS (MITAS) variant, ensuring operational readiness for the US Army, US Marine Corps, and future international military customers through foreign military sales. The contract will include maintenance services, spare parts management, logistics planning, deployment of field service representatives, and information management support. Structured as a sole-source agreement, the project will begin with a one-year base contract followed by two optional one-year extensions covering 2028 to 2030. The Army stated that Raytheon remains the only qualified contractor because of its original role in designing and manufacturing the ITAS system. Oversight of the program will be managed by the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. ITAS enhances the performance of the BGM-71 TOW missile by combining thermal imaging, laser rangefinding, and digital fire-control technology to improve target detection and engagement under day, night, and adverse weather conditions. The TOW missile itself has evolved significantly since its introduction during the Vietnam War, with modern variants capable of striking armored targets at ranges exceeding 3.7 kilometers while carrying powerful anti-tank warheads.
