China has broken decades of secrecy by unveiling its JL-3 SLBM during the Victory Day parade in Beijing, confirming the missile’s operational status and elevating the PLAN’s nuclear strike credibility. The JL-3, developed over nearly 20 years, surpasses the JL-2 with intercontinental reach (9,000–12,000 km), MIRV capability, and improved survivability. Carried by China’s Type 094A and future Type 096 SSBNs, the missile allows patrols deep in home waters while threatening global targets. Its ability to evade defenses makes it comparable to the U.S. Trident II D5. Experts see the JL-3 as proof that Beijing now possesses a credible sea-based second-strike force, reshaping nuclear deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.
