Negotiations between India and France over a large-scale Rafale fighter acquisition are gaining traction as New Delhi looks to bolster the Indian Air Force’s combat strength. The proposed government-to-government deal would involve the purchase of 114 Rafale jets and could be valued at roughly $22 billion. Indian authorities are emphasizing domestic production, technology transfer, and industrial participation as key conditions, with expectations that the aircraft would be manufactured in India. Previous agreements, including Tata Advanced Systems’ role in producing Rafale fuselage sections, lay the groundwork for deeper localization. If finalized, the program would address squadron shortages caused by legacy aircraft retirements and delays in indigenous fighter induction, while significantly strengthening India’s air combat capability.
