President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has intensified efforts to secure 24 used Eurofighter Typhoons from Qatar, while Türkiye simultaneously negotiates a separate acquisition of new-build jets and Meteor air-to-air missiles. The UK is leading talks to facilitate the Gulf handover, focused on Tranche 3A platforms and potential orders for 16 fresh Tranche 4 aircraft. Following prolonged German hesitation, Berlin has indicated it will not obstruct the export, making the Qatari and possibly Omani routes the fastest options for Türkiye’s growing air fleet.
Qatar’s Typhoons, among the newest in operation since 2022, feature the Praetorian self-protection suite and PIRATE infrared tracking. Oman’s 12 Tranche 3 jets, inducted by 2019, are similarly modern and could join the pool if re-export approvals are cleared. For Ankara, these secondhand acquisitions provide a near-term solution as F-16 Block 70 production slots remain constrained until late in the decade.
