Boeing has secured a $38.7-million contract from the Pentagon to modernize the Republic of Korea’s P-8A Poseidon aircraft through advanced mission software upgrades. The project centers on deploying the TOMS 105K package, designed to enhance operational efficiency, address aging system limitations, and enable smoother integration of new technologies. Among the major improvements is the addition of Multi-Static Active Coherent processing, which strengthens anti-submarine warfare performance by improving detection accuracy. The upgrade also incorporates the Harpoon II missile, broadening the aircraft’s strike capabilities against both maritime and land-based targets. Development and integration work will take place across several US states and in Pohang, South Korea, with program completion scheduled for January 2029. This initiative underscores the importance of open systems architecture in maintaining long-term platform relevance and supporting evolving mission requirements.
