The US Air Force has selected R4-Integration to deliver a $74-million communications modernization program for its fleet of HC-130J aircraft. The contract covers the installation of KuKa beyond line-of-sight satellite communication suites on 39 aircraft to improve connectivity during long-range missions. As part of the agreement, R4-Integration will supply hardware and software components, integrate and test the systems, produce installation kits and spare parts, and provide satellite communication services. The upgrade will enable the aircraft to utilize both Ku-band and Ka-band satellite frequencies, allowing more reliable and flexible communications in operational environments where traditional links may be limited. Work on the project will take place at multiple US Air Force facilities including Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona, Moody AFB in Georgia, and Kirtland AFB in New Mexico, with the program scheduled for completion by 2030. Funding for the initiative includes fiscal 2025 allocations from innovation procurement programs and the National Guard and Reserve Equipment Account. The modernization reflects broader efforts to enhance the capabilities of the HC-130J fleet. These aircraft perform key roles in personnel recovery, long-range surveillance, and special operations support. In recent years, the platform has received several upgrades designed to improve mission effectiveness. The US Coast Guard recently added another mission-equipped HC-130J featuring advanced radar and sensor systems, while other modernization efforts have focused on upgrading electro-optical and infrared equipment critical for surveillance and rescue operations.
