AeroVironment has received a $117.3 million contract from the US Army to manufacture an additional 82 P550 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) unmanned aerial systems, expanding the service’s next-generation reconnaissance capabilities. The aircraft will be assigned to battalion reconnaissance teams, providing commanders with improved intelligence, surveillance, and scouting support across a wide range of operational environments. The award represents the platform’s initial full-rate production contract following successful evaluations and earlier procurement orders. It follows a similar $117 million contract awarded in March, additional purchases placed in December, and initial deliveries that began in August 2025. The P550 combines vertical takeoff and landing capability with efficient fixed-wing flight, allowing operations without traditional runways while extending endurance and mission flexibility. The growing investment demonstrates the Army’s commitment to fielding advanced unmanned aircraft capable of supporting reconnaissance, target acquisition, force protection, and battlefield awareness during future military operations.
