The US Air Force is exploring a communications modernization program for its HH-60W Jolly Green II combat rescue helicopters. The initiative would replace the current Link-16 TacNet Tactical Radio with a multi-channel communication system capable of supporting both Link-16 data exchange and VHF/UHF voice transmissions simultaneously. L3Harris Technologies’ KOR-24A Small Tactical Terminal has been identified as a potential solution. The new terminal would allow the helicopter to exchange real-time tactical data with aircraft such as fighters and airborne early warning platforms while maintaining direct voice communication with ground forces and isolated personnel. The upgrade is intended to address emerging operational requirements and strengthen encrypted communications capability across joint forces. The HH-60W platform, derived from the UH-60M Black Hawk, serves as the Air Force’s latest combat search-and-rescue helicopter. It offers improved range, endurance, and payload capacity compared with the older HH-60G Pave Hawk fleet while incorporating advanced avionics and automated flight systems that reduce pilot workload during demanding rescue missions.
