Turkey’s TF KAAN next-generation fighter program represents the country’s ambition to achieve aerospace autonomy through an indigenous fifth-generation combat aircraft. Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, the twin-engine stealth multirole jet—previously known as TF-X—combines low observable shaping, internal weapons bays, advanced sensors, and network-centric avionics for air superiority and strike missions. It is intended to replace Turkey’s F-16 fleet from the late 2020s onward while also serving export markets such as Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. The first prototype flew in February 2024, marking a major step in the testing campaign. KAAN is expected to feature the MURAD AESA radar, ASELSAN electronic warfare systems, infrared search-and-track sensors, and AI-assisted data fusion. Initial prototypes use GE F110 engines, while future versions are planned to receive indigenous TEI-developed powerplants. If successful, KAAN would place Turkey among a limited group of nations fielding domestically developed stealth fighters.
