Boeing has commenced the next stage of modernization for the Royal Australian Air Force’s P-8A Poseidon fleet, introducing Increment 3 Block 2 upgrades to enhance operational readiness and ISR performance. Conducted at the company’s Jacksonville, Florida site, the work will integrate cutting-edge software, antennas, and sensors to improve real-time data sharing and mission efficiency. Australia, the first global customer outside the US to receive the upgrade, will see enhanced capability in anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. The $90.5 million effort is part of a phased plan involving initial modification in the US, followed by subsequent aircraft work at Boeing Defence Australia’s South Australia facility. Over 30 Australian trainees and engineers have joined the program, supporting workforce development and local sustainment capacity. Once completed, the upgrades will enable improved mission computing, greater communications reliability, and expanded operational range. The Poseidon modernization underscores Australia’s maritime surveillance ambitions and strengthens alliance interoperability across the Indo-Pacific.
