Germany is expanding its maritime intelligence and anti-submarine warfare posture through the acquisition of eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones, a move designed to complement its existing fleet of P-8A Poseidon aircraft. The €1.52 billion program includes training, logistics support, and future upgrades to allow deployment of sonobuoys and advanced sensors. While the Poseidon offers speed and heavy payload capacity, the MQ-9B provides unmatched endurance, allowing prolonged patrols over vast maritime areas. Data collected by the drones will be transmitted to ground stations and shared with ships, aircraft, and allied forces, enhancing situational awareness. German defense officials note that operating a system already in service with partner nations will reduce risk and accelerate operational readiness ahead of first flights planned for 2028.
