Saab has secured a 550 million Swedish kronor ($58.5 million) deal to provide its Giraffe 4A air surveillance radar system and support services to a Latin American country. The contract marks the first regional order for the land-based Giraffe 4A, highlighting growing demand for advanced air defense technologies in Latin America.
The Giraffe 4A radar, introduced in 2014, is capable of detecting and tracking multiple aerial threats. Its range extends up to 400 kilometers, enabling it to identify aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and even artillery projectiles. This makes it suitable for both air defense operations and military air traffic management.
According to Saab, the radar provides 360-degree coverage and refreshes its surveillance data every second. When concentrated on a known threat axis, it can deliver updates up to eight times per second, giving forces rapid warning and response capabilities.
The system is designed for quick deployment, requiring only two operators and less than 10 minutes to establish. Additionally, its compatibility with transport aircraft such as the C-130, A400M, and C-17 ensures strategic mobility for regional and international missions.
