General Atomics has secured a US Army contract to modernize the MQ-1C Gray Eagle ER with advanced ELINT sensors to boost battlefield survivability. The enhancements will help the drone locate hostile radar emitters, missile guidance systems, and electronic warfare assets while staying outside threat envelopes. Sierra Nevada Corporation is partnering on integration of the upgraded sensor suite. The data collected will support joint force targeting and improve protection for nearby crewed aircraft during combined missions. The Gray Eagle has also been tested with newer COMINT, radar, and networking payloads. The contract underscores concerns over the vulnerability of medium-altitude drones in modern conflicts and the need for smarter stand-off ISR solutions.
