The Dutch Ministry of Defence has formalized a partnership with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) to jointly develop an innovative small uncrewed aerial system for performing a range of ISR tasks. This new platform will be cost-effective and modular, able to accommodate various payloads for different mission requirements. GA-ASI has nominated VDL Defentec, a Dutch military vehicle specialist, to undertake contract manufacturing duties, supporting production in the Netherlands with shared expertise across design, logistics, and operational support. The program aims to commence flight tests for this SUAS by the end of 2025, with a plan to start low-rate production in 2026 both stateside and in the Netherlands. This collaboration forms part of a broader strategic effort to bolster European defense capabilities through transatlantic partnerships. It also signifies important industrial growth and technical knowledge transfer within the Dutch defense industry. Dutch minister Gijs Tuinman highlighted the project as an example of international cooperation enhancing NATO readiness and contributing to security challenges such as the conflict in Ukraine. The partnership and manufacturing plans mark a significant step to ensure rapid scalability and operational flexibility for future unmanned systems in service.
