The Indian Navy is preparing to commission INS Malvan, the second vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft program, significantly enhancing coastal defense and underwater surveillance capabilities. Specifically designed for operations in shallow littoral environments, the platform incorporates advanced indigenous sonar systems optimized for detecting submarines in acoustically challenging coastal waters. The vessel is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine rocket launchers, and specialized combat systems that enable rapid engagement of underwater threats while supporting maritime security operations close to shore. Constructed with more than eighty percent indigenous content at Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Malvan demonstrates the continued progress of India’s self-reliance initiative in naval shipbuilding. Together with the lead vessel INS Mahe, the new platform strengthens layered coastal defense by improving surveillance coverage, anti-submarine response capability, and protection of critical maritime infrastructure throughout the Indian Ocean region.
