Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) has delivered the 1000th T-90(IM) tank to the Indian Army from its Heavy Vehicles Factory facility in Avadi, marking a major milestone in India’s armored vehicle manufacturing and localization efforts. The T-90(IM) program reflects India’s broader push toward defense self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with nearly 80 percent of the platform now localized. AVNL has successfully indigenized critical components including electrical systems, line replacement units, cooling systems, and upgraded powerpacks, reducing reliance on imported Russian subsystems. The program has also supported the development of indigenous high-performance engines, including new 1,350-horsepower powerpacks intended for future fleet upgrades. The T-90 Bhishma continues to serve as the backbone of India’s Armoured Corps alongside the T-72 Ajeya and indigenous Arjun platforms. With more than 1,300 T-90 variants currently operational, the latest delivery ensures long-term sustainment, lifecycle support, and upgrade capability for India’s armored formations. Officials describe the achievement as a decisive shift away from foreign supply-chain dependence and a demonstration of the growing maturity of India’s domestic defense industrial base.
