India is moving closer to a substantial artillery modernization initiative with plans to procure 300 more K-9 Vajra tracked self-propelled howitzers. The potential order would strengthen the army’s deep-strike capabilities and reinforce operational readiness across multiple frontiers. Built domestically by Larsen & Toubro, the K-9 Vajra is adapted from South Korea’s K9 Thunder and is optimized for Indian terrain and operational requirements. Armed with a 155mm gun capable of firing precision-guided munitions to ranges of up to 50 kilometers, the system combines mobility, firepower, and rapid-response capability. A future fleet of 500 K-9s would represent one of the largest self-propelled artillery inventories in the region.
