Finland has expanded its artillery capabilities by signing a contract with South Korea for 112 additional K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers. The agreement, worth around €546.8 million, includes logistics support, spare parts, and testing equipment, with deliveries expected from 2028 onward. The K9 system, produced by Hanwha Aerospace, is known for its long-range precision strike capability and high mobility, making it a key asset for modern artillery operations. Finland has been steadily increasing its K9 fleet since its initial purchase in 2017, and the latest order will push its inventory beyond 200 units. The new systems will replace older towed artillery and enhance the army’s ability to support frontline forces with rapid and accurate firepower. Additionally, Finland has developed local maintenance and sustainment capabilities, ensuring long-term operational readiness. The acquisition reflects broader NATO trends, with multiple member states adopting the K9 platform to modernize their artillery forces and improve interoperability.
