Poland has received 28 additional K2 Black Panther main battle tanks, beginning deliveries under its latest agreement with South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem. The wider contract is valued at 9 trillion won, or approximately $6.5 billion.The arrival of the new tanks brings Poland’s operational K2 fleet to 208 vehicles. This total includes the 180 tanks obtained under the country’s initial procurement agreement signed in 2022.Many of the newly delivered tanks are expected to be assigned to the 16th Mechanized Division. The formation plays a major role in protecting northeastern Poland and strengthening NATO’s eastern defensive posture near Russia and Belarus.The current procurement covers another 180 K2 tanks. Of these, 116 K2GF vehicles are scheduled for delivery through 2027. The remaining 64 tanks will be locally customized K2PL variants, with deliveries planned between 2028 and 2030.The agreement also includes 81 specialized support vehicles based on the K2 chassis. These consist of bridging vehicles, recovery platforms, and engineering variants intended to support armored formations in the field.A domestic support and production facility is also being established in Poland. State-owned Bumar-Łabędy will participate in final assembly of 61 K2PL tanks and help incorporate Polish components and additional protection features.The localized tanks are expected to include enhanced side armor, counter-drone equipment, and active protection technology.Poland’s armored expansion is partly driven by the transfer of older Soviet-designed equipment to Ukraine. Warsaw is replacing those systems with newer Western and South Korean platforms.Once its current modernization plans are completed, Poland expects to operate nearly 900 modern tanks across its K2, M1A2 Abrams, and Leopard 2 fleets, giving the country one of Europe’s most substantial armored forces.
