Taiwan is preparing to produce 246 domestically developed reconnaissance vehicles between 2028 and 2033 under the Iron Cavalry Project. Designed for army reconnaissance units, the vehicle will support battlefield surveillance, security patrols, and counterattack operations while complementing the military’s existing Humvee fleet. The Armaments Bureau is overseeing development, with Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute contributing mobility technologies and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology developing the electro-optical reconnaissance system. The four-wheel-drive vehicle uses a 205-horsepower engine and can reach 100 kilometers per hour, with an operational range of about 500 kilometers. A telescopic mast-mounted electro-optical sensor provides reconnaissance capability out to approximately 12 kilometers. A remotely operated 12.7 mm weapon station provides self-protection and fire-support capability. The program forms part of Taiwan’s broader effort to improve wartime readiness and sustain military operations during a prolonged conflict. Upcoming Han Kuang exercises will also examine production continuity, logistics resilience, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
