Latvia is advancing its domestic defense capabilities through a cooperative project with a major European defense company to build a state-of-the-art ammunition plant. The facility will produce a large volume of artillery rounds each year and incorporate regional suppliers, while promoting local employment and skills development. Full production processes, including forging, filling, testing, and quality assurance, will be implemented to ensure high standards and supply chain resilience. The project is structured as a joint venture, with the foreign firm holding a majority stake and Latvia retaining a significant share. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2026, with production commencing roughly a year later. This step reflects the country’s strategic focus on defense self-sufficiency, reducing dependency on external sources, and contributing to regional security efforts. Similar initiatives in neighboring states demonstrate coordinated efforts to enhance European defense industrial capacity and readiness.
