The US Navy has introduced its seventh Navajo-class support ship, the USNS Solomon Atkinson (T-ATS 12), marking another milestone in fleet modernization. Named after decorated SEAL veteran Solomon Atkinson, the vessel honors his combat service and contributions to astronaut training programs. Developed under a 2017 initiative, the Navajo-class replaces older tug and rescue ships with more versatile platforms capable of supporting salvage missions, towing operations, and emergency response tasks. Built with a large mission deck and powered by twin diesel engines, the ship offers extended operational endurance and improved flexibility. The program, involving Austal USA and Bollinger Shipyards, aims to deliver 10 such vessels to enhance logistical and recovery capabilities across naval operations.
