Saft has secured a strategic contract from Naval Group to supply advanced lithium-ion battery systems for future Barracuda and Scorpene submarine programs, supporting the transition toward more efficient underwater propulsion technologies. The new battery architecture will replace conventional lead-acid energy storage systems, providing substantially higher energy density, faster charging performance, extended submerged endurance, and improved operational efficiency while maintaining the stringent safety and reliability standards required for military submarine operations. Saft will manufacture both the battery systems and electrochemical cells internally, ensuring complete control over production quality and lifecycle management. The agreement supports ongoing modernization across Naval Group’s submarine portfolio while advancing technologies that improve underwater endurance, reduce maintenance requirements, and enhance mission flexibility for next-generation conventional and nuclear-powered submarine fleets.
