Japan is preparing formal discussions with New Zealand over a potential export of its upgraded Mogami-class stealth frigate as Tokyo continues expanding defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The next-generation FFM variant features advanced radar, sonar, mine countermeasure systems, and a 32-cell Mark 41 vertical launch system capable of deploying anti-ship and air defense missiles. New Zealand is reportedly evaluating the Japanese design against the UK’s Type 31 frigate as part of future naval modernization plans. The talks also reflect broader regional security coordination involving Japan, Australia, and New Zealand amid growing Chinese maritime activity.
